How to be a luthier4/7/2024 I have so far explored several intensive guitar making courses: one in Belfast one in Spain and one in England. Financially, I have the funds set aside to set up a workshop and buy the tools etc. But my motives are being driven by the need to develop a craft in an area that I love and so I feel that financial gain is secondary to the experience. Perhaps I might add that I’m fully aware that in the UK alone there are numerous fantastic luthiers, all of them are competing in a small market. I also know that at 50 years of age it’s perhaps the wrong time to start (no chance of getting long apprenticeships under the eye of a master), and I also understand that selling guitars in this climate is extremely difficult. ![]() I’m under no illusion that becoming a luthier is easy. I’m at the point where I need good, and hopefully positive advice. At the same time I fell in love with classical guitar (although I have played guitar for a long time) and also my interest in becoming a luthier began to develop. ![]() I took voluntary redundancy and this has left me financially secure. Just over a year ago, I left my job as a senior lecturer in graphic design. I have been reluctant to post a ‘how do I become a luthier’ topic in this forum, but seeing as I’m serious I thought I’d take the plunge now.
